Whether you are walking, jogging or running get logging the number of steps that you are doing.

Counting and logging your steps is a great way to stay motivated and keep you on track to getting active and staying active?

How many steps are you aiming to do each day?

Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. However if that seems a lot to do to start with try to start off slowly and aim to increase the number of steps over time.

Its a great way to get to that 30 minutes of activity in to your daily routine and is something which is a great aim to work towards but be realistic with how much you can do to start with and try adding 500 steps every time you feel you need a new challenge. Or make your walks a bit more challenging by walking up hills or speeding up.

Getting Started

Use your pedometer to find out how many steps you take in a normal day.

  • It can be as little 900 or as many as 5,000, depending upon what you do.
  • Record the total number of steps each day for a week and log it on the activity log. As soon as you feel ready, try to increase your steps each day.
  • Build up slowly and build up towards the 10,000 steps. Don’t worry if you are not doing 10,000 steps. Be realistic and start slowly by increasing the number of steps you do over a few weeks.

Step 1 – Record your baseline – use your pedometer to see how many steps you take in a normal day. Don’t worry how many you do. Don’t forget to log the number here…
Step 2 – Set your daily target and weekly goal
As soon as you feel ready try to increase the number of steps you do
Step 3 – Start walking and logging your activity
