Creswell Leisure Centre has become the first in the East Midlands to launch the new Amateur Swimming Association’s Swimfit program.
Swimfit provides a gym style programme for the pool that is broken down into four themes to suit your goals and motivations. It tailors swim training programmes to suit individual needs, providing expert advice, free online coaching tools and options to track your progress all on www.swimfit.com
The scheme is split into four specific training areas:
• Health is designed for those who probably swim once or twice per week; the program will allow you to incorporate swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle programme.
• Shape up and Tone is for those looking to bring about some changes in the way they look. It can be used as part of a weight management programme to achieve a more toned appearance or maybe as part of a weight loss programme.
• Fitness is aimed at those who are using swimming as their primary means of keeping fit.
• Competitive focuses on those with aspirations to compete, or for those already competing but need a little extra.
Participants are also able to pick up a training card on poolside and follow the programmes to record their own achievements if they do not have access to the online version.
Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts and Leisure, Councillor Ann Syrett said, “Swimfit is a fantastic way to exercise the whole body and is full of advice and fun programmes to help you structure your time in the pool, meaning that you’ll never get bored while you work toward your goals.
“Everyone who has signed up to the scheme is really excited about it and although it is specific to each person it also helps create a bit of friendly rivalry and good banter in the pool. We are delighted to become the first in the East Midlands to launch the scheme and it once again shows that we are one of the leading lights when it comes to encouraging people to swim and keep active and healthy.”
The program will replace the regular ‘Adult Swim’ slot, which is Tuesdays 8.00pm until 9.45pm. More information about Swimfit, and details of how to register for the program can be found by visiting www.swimfit.com
KELLOGG’S AQUATIC CHAMPIONS LOOKING FOR SERIAL SWIMMERS
Bolsover District Council is combating the government’s decision to axe free swimming as we have become the first in the East Midlands to introduce their very own Kellogg’s Aquatic Champions.
Five Kellogg’s Champions have been recruited by Creswell Leisure Centre to try and encourage more people to take part in swimming and promote the leisure centre and its activities.
The Champions - Joyce Betts, Kevin Woods, Alan Hall, Gladys Hall and Jim Wells - have been chosen due to their constant support of the leisure centre and their personable nature. Apprentice Leisure Attendants Bethany Marshall and Nathan Peat will also join the Champions and become advocates of the centre, offering prospective new adult customers a free trial session of any adult aquatic activity, with a view to encouraging them to become lifelong visitors to the centre.
Once at the centre, an Aquatic Advisor will help each individual choose the best aquatic activity to suit them and help to give that personal touch during their visit to the leisure centre.
Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts and Leisure, Councillor Ann Syrett, said “This is another of shining example of Creswell Leisure Centre leading the way when it comes to encouraging swimming and aquatic participation. The staff are always at the forefront when it comes to developing new schemes and the customers are always willing to help and join in – showing what a great community and family facility this really this.
“This is a great idea and the aquatic champs have already been out and about encouraging people to take up water based activities to help them keep fit and healthy.”
The Kellogg’s Aquatic Champions idea came from the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and supported by Kellogg's to encourage participation in swimming and aquatic activities. They chose twelve people nationally to attend the initial training days to train others on the Aquatic Champions idea, one of whom was Paul Blakemore, Creswell Leisure Centre Manager.
Bruce Learner, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Kellogg’s, said: “We’re aiming to train up 1,000 Swim Champions around the country this year to remind people how enjoyable swimming can be and of course what good exercise it is. For many people, I believe that a friendly familiar face, a structured introduction, or re-introduction to the local pool is all the encouragement needed so that’s what we’re trying to do with this project.”
Roger Glithero, ASA Director for the East Midlands said, “Creswell is not the biggest of leisure centres, but I would probably class it as the most innovative centre in the East Midlands Region, and it is in the top six in the country for customer service. The way they have seamlessly integrated the scheme into their everyday activities is something to be admired and used across the country.”

Chesterfield College student bags a place in England Colleges Football Squad
Chesterfield College student, Chloe Foster, 18, from Swanwick, has achieved a place in the final 22-woman England Colleges Football squad. Chloe is the only representative for the entire East Midlands region and the first female student from Chesterfield College to make the squad.

Chloe is currently completing a 2 year course in fitness and coaching at Chesterfield College. When she is not studying, Chloe plays for Women’s Premiership team, Nottingham Forest, in her natural position of centre midfield.
Chloe explains, “To get into the squad I took part in a trial last year of 30+ women. College staff were great throughout the entire process, giving me confidence in my abilities. I’m now focused on getting in the starting eleven for our first game against Australia, then I can look forward to the tour we will go on later in the year. In the long term, once I’ve finished my College course I’d like to go into a career in one of the different areas I’ve studied, such as coaching, personal training or nutrition and the England Colleges squad gives me great experience that I can use towards that goal.
Born (to coach) in the USA
Four Chesterfield College students are set for the experience of a lifetime when they jet off to the United States of America to coach youngsters in the art of football, or should that be soccer?
The College has teamed up with various organisations, including ‘Challenger’ British Soccer Camps, to forge links that give coaching students the opportunity to find employment. Last year, Ashley Rhodes became the first Chesterfield College student to go to the USA on a coaching scheme and whilst he is returning this year, three others will also take part in the life-changing experience. Along with Ashley, Jake Ball, Oliver Ridgway and Mark Shepherd will all be venturing to various states to coach for a minimum of six weeks.
Jake Ball, 18, from Kirkby-in-Ashfield and currently in his second year of a Sports Coaching National Diploma, explains, “The College made me aware of the coaching opportunity after inviting various soccer camps in to speak with us. Following this initial trip to America I would ideally like to gain a scholarship out there, something that all of my tutors have been working really hard to make a possibility. The experience should be fantastic and will give us a great sense of independence as we’re all going to different parts of the country; I’ve been allocated a camp at Rhode Island.”
Oliver Ridgway, 20, from Renishaw, a first year National Diploma in Sport student, remarks, “I knew someone who had taken part in something similar and decided to investigate it further via the soccer camp’s website. Things went from there really and the fact that College staff were heavily involved really helped me in terms of organising what the trip required. The programme is great, whilst we’re out there we earn a weekly wage, are supplied with food, accommodation and travel. I’ve been allocated a space in Seattle and I can’t wait to go!”

Neil Cluxton, Sports Lecturer at Chesterfield College, explains, “Fellow Lecturer, Ryan Bullock and I have been working closely with a number of coaching organisations both in this country and abroad to create a passage of progression for our NVQ level 2&3 coaching students to gain employment into the coaching industry.
These students are the second wave to go to the USA after Ashley set the ball rolling last summer completing a successful 10 week contract. The fact he had the character to take this opportunity last summer and work with Challenger Sports in the USA has encouraged further students to grasp this life changing experience.”
Youth Sector Development Fund launches at Clowne Campus
Chesterfield College’s Clowne campus has played host to the launch of Sporting Futures project in the Bolsover area. Working closely with the College’s Further Education Sports Co-ordination team, the project aims to raise participation in sport and recreational activities in the district in an effort to keep young people off the streets and out of trouble.
An exciting array of activities was on offer throughout the launch, which was attended by schools from throughout the region. Activity groups including extreme three-wheeled pedal bikes, rock climbing, martial arts, football and dance were available for the schoolchildren to try out. Information on how to join each of the groups and many more activities was also available from Sporting Futures and College staff as well as College students who helped out on the day.
