The National Lottery Olympic Park Run Ballot is open

Olympic park runThe ballot for places in The National Lottery Olympic Park Run, which takes place on 31 March 2012, has launched.  Members of the public have until 27th October to apply to take part in what will be the very first public event staged in the magnificent Olympic Stadium.

5,000 lucky applicants will have the chance to be the first runners to cross the Olympic Stadium finish line in this historic five-mile run, which celebrates the contribution of The National Lottery and its players to London 2012.

Launching the ballot in the Olympic Park on Friday were Christine Ohuruogu, Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Dianne Thompson, Chief Executive of National Lottery operator, Camelot.

The online ballot can be entered by visiting www.national-lottery.co.uk/run between now and the closing time of midnight on 27 October 2011.  The National Lottery Olympic Park Run is open to anyone aged 16 or over, of any running ability.  The 5,000 lucky hopefuls chosen from the ballot to tackle the run will also be allocated a pair of spectator passes each to the Olympic Stadium, so that two friends or family members can cheer them on and be part of this memorable occasion.

The five-mile course will traverse the Olympic Park and offer access across it on a scale not yet experienced by the public. The route will pass alongside the other iconic Olympic and Paralympic Games venues that The National Lottery has helped fund and where many elite athletes’ hopes and dreams of London 2012 medal success will be realised just a few months later.  The run will reach its thrilling conclusion on the home straight in the spectacular Olympic Stadium.  Vying to cross the finish line first will also be a host of former and current Olympic and Paralympic athletes and celebrity runners.

Dianne Thompson, Chief Executive of Camelot, said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in one of the most thrilling events in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  The chance to take your place in history as one of the first people to cross the finish line in the Olympic Stadium is what dreams are made of.  The National Lottery is proud to make that dream a reality for those who are lucky enough to win a place in the run.”

Sebastian Coe commented: “The National Lottery and its players have made a significant contribution in helping us realise our vision for the most spectacular Olympic Park, which will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.  I’m delighted that The National Lottery will give members of the public the chance to be the first to cross the finish line in the Olympic Stadium.”

Christine Ohuruogu said: “The support of National Lottery players in helping athletes fulfil their dreams of medal success in London 2012 and beyond cannot be underestimated. Since the lottery’s funding of elite sport commenced in 1997 it has played a huge role in putting more and more sportsmen and women on the podium for GB. From allowing athletes to train full time, to providing world-class coaches, medical support and training facilities, lottery funding has made the difference. What better way could there be to celebrate the contribution of The National Lottery’s players to British sport than with this historic event?”

The cost of entering The National Lottery Olympic Park Run will be £15 for successful applicants.  This entry fee covers a race number, two spectator passes for the Olympic Stadium, a full information pack, an event T-shirt to run in on the day, computer chip timing for a completely accurate running time, a souvenir finisher's medal, on-course refreshments and a finisher's pack.

Derbyshire Paralympian and London 2012 hopeful Leon Taylor will start the race, and as part of the event there will be a number of sporting activities and demonstrations including blind football, boccia, sitting volleyball and cricket.

Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: “The Inspire programme is ensuring the legacy of the 2012 Games starts now as projects like the Jog Derbyshire 5k are enabling people in Derbyshire to make positive life changes.”

Steve breaks the 100k barrier!

Heage Joggers leader Steve Saunders has raised the bar again after completing his latest challenge. Steve, who only returned to running recently after a break of around 20 years, took part in the Hell on the Humber 12 hour race! The race runs from 7pm to 7am and takes place over a 4 mile loop accross the Humber Bridge. During the 12 hours Steve managed to complete 63.58 miles, walking only 1 mile! The first 26 miles (marathon) was completed in 4 hours. Steve said "This is the first time I have tried to run over 50 miles so I was really pleased with my result". Steve added "After 10 hours constant running my legs had had it, but I managed to carry on and break the 100km barrier well inside the 12 hours."

Jog Derbyshire Leaders tackle the Dovedale Dipper!

Leaders of the Ripley, Heage and South Wingfield Jog Derbyshire groups took part in the Dovedale Dipper on Sunday 7th August. A full marathon (26.5miles) is tough enough for most people, but the four leaders, who are all members of Ripley Running Club, took part in the Dipper which is all off road! Steve Saunders, leader of the new Heage group, completed the distance in 4hrs 50 minutes followed by Ripley leader Wayne Yearwood in 5hrs 11mins. Eleanor Robinson, a Jog Leader for more than two years in Ripley was close behind finishing in 5hrs 14mins. Anne Cook who leads the South Wingfield group unfortunatly sustained an injury at 17 miles and was unable to complete the event. The leaders from Ripley Running Club have recruited over 150 joggers since the groups were launched in 2009 and continue to support new joggers every week.

Melbourne Joggers trial Nordic Walking

Melbourne Joggers leader, Martin Stephens, is hoping to establish a Nordic Walking group alongside the successful jog group sessions in Melbourne on Tuesday evenings, starting in August. Martin, who has recently gained his Nordic Walking Instructor qualification will be establishing a new Nordic Walking group in Melbourne as part of South Derbyshire District Council’s Get Active in The Forest campaign.

Nordic Walking uses specially designed poles to enhance normal walking. The result is a whole body workout that uses 90% of the skeletal muscles and can burn up to 46% more calories than normal walking.

Martin will be launching the new evening Nordic Walking group on Tuesday 9 August with a special trial session, providing an opportunity for anyone interested to come along and give it a go (a number of sets of walking poles will be available for people to borrow for the session).

Places are limited so if you are interested, please email Martin at martstephens@googlemail.com and let him know (you’ll need to provide details of your height to ensure you get the correct sized poles) or call him on 07971 611429.

For more information about Nordic Walking visit www.withpoles.com
Martin will be Nordic Walking the Robin Hood Half Marathon in Nottingham this September.

Hilly success for the Hilton Joggers

Hilton Joggers completed the JCB Lakeside 5 mile race on Thursday 14th July 2011.  The race was a hilly two lap course at the JCB lakeside site at Rocester.  Temperatures were very warm, which made running particularly hard going, but all members of the team completed the race within 47.35 mins. There were many running clubs from the midlands competing and Hilton Joggers put in a big effort and pushed themselves to keep up with the more experienced racers. This was the Hilton Joggers group's third race this year having completed the Fradley 10k in March and the Burton Riverside 10k Run for St. Gile's Hospice in May. Well done to the Hilton Joggers who took part. Their next challenge is a much flatter 10k race in Burton in August.  All monies raised from the JCB 5 mile event is being donated to the NSPCC.

Walk-Jog-Run 2 the b2net 5k

Congratulations to the 100+ runners who took part in North Derbyshire Running Club's inaugural b2net 5k in Chesterfield on Sunday 10 July. This new 5k event, organised in conjunction with Chesterfield FC Community Trust, was a great success, attracting walkers, joggers and more seasoned runners to complete the distance in some impressive times.

The first male runner to finish was Steve Leverton in a time of 18mins 07secs, and the first female runner Suzanne Sharman in a time of 19mins 26 seconds - both representing NDRC.

We were pleased to see that Jog Derbyshire was represented at the race too, with a number of our keen Jog Derbyshire joggers taking part.

Well done to everyone who walked, jogged or ran to the b2net, and a big thank you to NDRC for organising the event.

Jackie completes Great North Swim

Swanwick Joggers' Jackie Denton took on a different kind of challenge this month, as one of the thousands of competitors taking part in the British Gas Great North Swim at Windermere in the Lake District. The Great North Swim - which took place on Fri 17, Sat 18 and Sun 19 June - is one of the biggest swimming events ever to be staged in the UK, with competitors swimming the equivalent of the distance between London and Sydney and raising an estimated £1.5 million for charity in the process.

Jackie signed up for the Great North swim in 2010 after a friend mentioned she was doing it. Unfortunately the 2010 event was cancelled due to algae in the lake so Jackie - not wanting to waste all that training! - entered the Salford Quays Great Swim in late September instead.

But lake Windermere was still the challenge, so Jackie entered this year's Great Swim, successfully completing her event in a time of 52.18 minutes.

Jackie said "I still wanted to swim Lake Windermere as that was what I had initially set out to do. I managed to swim the distance breastroke in 52.18 although this wasn’t as good a time as my previous swim at Salford where I managed 47.50.  I did find it quite hard going in Windermere - although the lake looked quite still, when you are actually in the water it’s really quite wavy!  I did  enjoy it though and am looking forward to doing more swims. Loch Ness looks quite interesting!?"Jackie

Jackie has been jogging with Kate Wills and the Swanwick Joggers since January 2010 to increase her general fitness. She has completed a number of 5k runs and completed Derbyshire Building Society 10K in April this year. She admits that she had to walk/run the last 5k - so her target for next year is to run the whole distance.

Congratulations to Jackie on her fantastic achievements.

It's amazing just what we can do when we set our minds to it. So what's your challenge for 2011?

Jog Eckington runners complete Race for Life Events

A number of the Jog Eckington runners took part in recent Race for Life 5ks in the region.

Pictured (right) are Christine Jenkinson, Manisha Patel, Sarah Hall, RFL Nicola Littlewood and Sally Storey  who participated alongside 2500 other runners, joggers and walkers at the Chesterfield RFL event on Sunday 19 June. All finished in fantastic times of between 26 and 28 minutes.

Another stirling performance from Jog Eckington runner Kirsty Brown (below) who took part in the Clumber Park RFL event on Sunday 12 June, finishing in a very respectable 36 minutes.

Kirsty RFLChristine , Manisha , Kirsty and Sally have all been with jog Eckington for about a year and a half. Nicola and Sarah have only been with the jog group since March this year. This was also Manisha, Sally, Nicola and Sarah's first ever event.

Congratulations to everyone who took part.

Sun Shines for Rosliston 5k event

Despite a chill to the air early in the morning, the atmosphere soon warmed up and the sun shone on the joggers taking part in our Jog Derbyshire 5k at Rosliston Forestry Centre on Sunday 5 June. Over 70 runners, joggers and walkers took to the trails, with the winner crossing the line in a rather spectacular 17mins 19 secs. The first lady to finish was Jog Derbyshire Leader, Lesley Crane, in an impressive time of 20mins 20 secs.
Our next 5k event will be taking place at Shipley Country Park on Sunday 4 September. Entry is not yet open - but more details will be available soon on our events pages

Nutrition session a great success

We are delighted to report that our recent nutrition session, delivered by guest presenter Michael Fish from Science in Sport, was a resounding success. The session, which took place on 15 May at Alfreton Leisure Centre, was attended by 28 Jog Derbyshire leaders and joggers as well as a few local club representatives, and covered aspects such as healthy eating and pre and post event nutrition and hydration.

Thanks to Michael for a great evening, and for providing everyone with some SIS samples to try for themselves. Feedback from everyone that attended was extremely positive  - and we hope to welcome Michael back in the autumn for another advice session.

Leaden Boot

Four tough-nut Jog Derbyshire Leaders took part in the Leaden Boot Challenge Marathon in the Peak District on Sunday 22nd May, recording some impressive times.

The Leaden Boot Challenge is a 26.2 mile walk/run with 5000 feet of ascent, starting and finishing in the White Peak village of Alstonefield. It is a tough challenge event, with a maximum completion time of 11 hours. The route takes in Milldale, Ilam Hall, Calton, Throwley Hall, Grindon, Wetton Mill, Hulme End, Sheen, Pilsbury, Hartington, Beresford Dale, Narrow Dale and back to Alstonefield.

The four leaders who taking part were Steve Saunders (9th place in 5hrs 20mins), Wayne Yearwood (12th place in 5hrs 35mins), Anne Cook (15th place in 5hr 36mins) and Eleanor Robinson (37th  place in 6hr 32mins). Congratulations to Steve, Wayne, Anne and Eleanor on such a terrific performance.

12 months 13.1 miles and 4.5 stone

Barlborough Gentle Jogger Adele Crapper has come a long way in just twelve months – from complete novice jogger to half-marathon runner and Jog Leader.

Inspired by her nephew Sam, who has non-Hodgkins lymphoma (“he is the reason I started this crazy running thing!”) Adele completed the Sheffield Half marathon on Sunday 8 May in 2 hours 30 mins – marking the end of a year’s training.

Not only has Adele been raising money for PACT and the Banana Army charities - which help and support children like Sam and their families get through the treatment and trauma that cancer causes – she has also lost 4.5 stones in weight, and can proudly claim that she can run a whopping 13.1 miles! Not bad for someone who started out as a complete beginner with leader Sharon Bache and the Barlborough Joggers a year ago! Adele has accomplished some marvellous achievements in just twelve short months.

Adele said of her jog group “I’ve met some wonderful people who are now friends; the people I run with are fantastic and so supportive, there is a great feeling in the jog group and the experienced runners are always happy to share their advice and tips. Jog Derbyshire Adele Sheffield Halfis a great project and there are some really inspiring people volunteering as leaders.  Without the support of Sharon and the guys in the group I really couldn't have achieved all this. If I think back to last year when I first started and Andrea took me on my first three mile run I simply didn’t believe I would ever achieve my half marathon goal, let alone become a Jog Leader.

Pictured is Adele (centre) with her nephew Sam and Barlborough Jog leader Sharon Bache (left). Sam is still having daily chemotherapy and is well at the moment but won't know for another year whether he will be ok or need further treatment.

Marathon Success for Dynamic Derbyshire Leaders

Several of our Jog Derbyshire leaders took to the streets of London on Sunday 17 April to take part in the 2011 Virgin London Marathon. Congratulations to the following individuals who completed the 26.2mile course in some fantastic times:

Emma Jane Eaton - 4.26.02
Anne Cook - 3.52.47
Steve Saunders - 3.40.34
John Ashover - 4.02.54
Graham Sheen - 4.40.57

Great Achievements at the Derby 10k

Another great Jog Derbyshire turn out was evident at the Derbyshire Building Society 10k and fun run on Sunday 3 April at Pride Park Stadium, Derby. Congratulations to all our joggers who took part in the 10k and fun run - the Jog Derbsyhire team were proud to see so many of you cross the finish line amongst the 3000+ runners who took part.

Well done to all the 10k joggers from William Greggers, Sandiacre Friesland, Rutland Sports Park, Etwall, Darley Emus, Derby Trotters, Buxton Pool, Repton and Belper groups, and to leaders Liam, Donna, Helen S, Emma, Joy, Karen, Gary, Phil, Dave, Helen P, Jo, Paddy and Annice, who helped, supported (or ran!) on the day. And a big thank you to Kath Richmond for enthusing her West Park groups enough to tackle the fun run. Fantastic!

We had over 75 joggers attend our Club Jog reception in the Avensis Suite, many bringing along family and friends who supported them on their 10k and fun run jogs. We hope that you all enjoyed having access to Club Jog to store kit, rendezvous with your group and pick up a few freebies. There will certainly be more Club Jog events in the future.

We look forward to seeing you all jogging again soon in Chesterfield (for the "run to the b2net" 5ks) and Rosliston for the Jog Derbyshire 5k. Visit our events pages for details.

Barlborough Gentle Joggers hit their century

We are absolutely delighted - if a little flabbergasted - to announce that since starting the jog group in early 2010, Barlborough Gentle Joggers have now recruited over 100 joggers to their Tuesday and Thursday groups. Due to the dedication and enthusiasm of Leader Sharon Bache and her co-leaders Rachel, Andrea, Graham, Adele, Roger, Dave and Sarah - the Barlborough group has been able to cater for both complete beginners and more able joggers/runners and has has steadily grown in numbers week by week. Well done to Sharon and her team, and to all the Barlborough Gentle Joggers for making it worth while. Thanks too, to Clowne Road Runners, who have supported the Jog Derbyshire venture from the outset and have been signposting complete beginners to the Barlborough group since it's inception. Brilliant!!

Jog Eckington conquer the castle

A team of keen Jog Derbyshire joggers from our Eckington group competed in the Bolsover Castle 10k on Sunday 23 January. The event organised by North Derbyshire Running Club - and postponed from December due to the ice and snow - was well attended, and the Eckington joggers all did incredibly well considering an unplanned lay-off from their training in December due to the weather.

Bolsover CastlePictured L to R are: Kelvin Collins (1hr 18), Alison Slack (1hr 04), Geoff Green (45min), Darren Ward (51 min) and Kirsty Brown (1hr 11).

This was Kirsty's first 10k so to keep encouraged and motivated Kirsty fundraised for a cancer charity, raising over £800 from the event. Congratulations to Kirsty, Kelvin, Alison, Geoff and Darren  for their endeavours!

Jog Eckington are setting their sights on another 10k in March-April time, either at Dronfield or Lincoln.
